Job Description:
The Great Basin Institute is hiring an Archaeology Crew Lead to facilitate cultural resource survey, site recordation, and National Register of Historic Places eligibility assessments in support of a variety of Section 106 and 110 compliance and research projects on lands administered by Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Parashant National Monument, other units of the National Park Service, and other federal agencies. The incumbent will focus on providing input/report of findings and site assessments to projects. It is anticipated that the incumbent will be able to draw upon the following in order in to accomplish project objectives:
Knowledge of cultural resource management, including laws and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria;
Ability to implement field projects and maintain productivity;
Working with topographic maps, compass, etc.;
GIS/GPS use and implementation;
Large scale cultural resource survey experience;
Cultural resource site recording, in field and site records;
Artifact identification and age/use interpretation;
Ability to write reports summarizing potential effects to eligible cultural resources based on current condition and proposed actions;
Work with current aerial photos, GIS, archival documents (historic maps and literature) to develop historic context; 
Critically review data collection needs for cultural resource assessments; and
Ability to run an archaeology field crew of 2 to 4 interns and volunteers in remote locations and camp for extended periods of time.
 

Contract Timeline:
o Six month appointment beginning Winter 2019, or upon completion of a Department of Interior background investigation
o Potential for an extension up to one year, pending available funding and positive performance review
o 40 hours per week; some overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required

Location:
Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) Headquarters is located in Boulder City, Nevada, a 20 minute drive from the city of Henderson, which lies on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Lake Mead National Recreation Area encompasses nearly 1.5 million acres in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, including mountains, canyons, valleys, and two vast lakes. From the mouth of the Grand Canyon, the park follows the Arizona-Nevada border along what was formerly 140 miles of the Colorado River. Opportunities for recreation abound.

Compensation and Benefits:
o Rate of pay: $20/hour

Job Qualifications:
o Educational experience with a degree focused on archeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies; applicants with advanced degrees encouraged to apply;
o Crew supervision and experience training archaeology technicians;
o Ability to work with minimal supervision in remote locations;
o Ability to navigate with GPS unit/map and compass;
o Physically capable of walking and working in rough, uneven terrain, and walking in remote locations with heavy vegetative cover;
o Experienced in surveying for a wide variety of cultural resource sites;
o Experienced in collecting and managing field data;
o Ability to utilize computer programs such as Microsoft word, Excel spreadsheets and GIS;
o Ability to input field data into computer programs and produce graphs/data tables to be utilized for reports;
o Organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines; 
o Ability to write reports summarizing potential effects to the resource based on current condition and proposed actions;
o Ability to effectively communicate to a diverse audience including co-workers, members of the pubic, and agency personnel; 
o Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate and graphically display data; 
o Self-motivated with ability to maintain a positive attitude while working in a diverse team environment; and
o Incumbent must be able to hike on rough, steep terrain and must be able to carry a pack weighing 40-50 pounds, orient using map and compass, ride in boats, camp under primitive conditions, and work in a variety of weather conditions ranging from winter lows below freezing to summer highs with temperatures exceeding 110 degrees.

Additional qualifications:
o Motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter that has the flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities and possesses strong organizational skills; 
o Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented; 
o Willingness to spend multiple days camping in the field;
o Willingness to sometimes work irregular hours (e.g., early mornings, late nights); 
o Ability to work productively, consistently and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals; 
o Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads;
o Familiarity with backcountry, low-impact principles preferred.

Successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
