Job Description:
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the BLM (NV) Elko District Office (EKDO) is recruiting two GIS Technicians to support the District’s cultural resource program. The Technician will use analog records and GIS to insure that cultural resource data from approximately 4,000 records have the correct geospatial data to be stored in the SHPO database. This archaeological archiving and records management project will provide the successful applicant with exposure to federal data, records and database systems, provide insight about how a federal land management agency operates under a multiple use mission, and will offer the opportunity to develop, hone and sharpen skills related to GIS and data management.

Contract Timeline:
• 6-month appointment starting April 15th 2019
• Full-time, 40 hours per week

The BLM Elko District Office encompasses 12.3 million acres in northeastern Nevada within the Basin and Range Province. Recreation opportunities, including hiking, camping, visiting cultural resource sites, and wildlife viewing, abound in this region. The town of Elko (pop. 18,000) is located along the I-80 corridor and is approximately 230 miles west of Salt Lake City, UT and 290 miles east of Reno, NV. Elko proudly honors its history and culture with events through the year, including the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and National Basque Festival.

Compensation and Benefits:
• Rate of Pay: $15.00/hour
• Benefits: Paid personal leave; health insurance

If the applicant is successful in completing their full term of service (no less than six months) and completes this service in good standing with the partner agency (the BLM), they will be eligible for two years of non-competitive hiring authority for federal jobs (i.e the ability to be hired for jobs advertised only to internal government employees).

Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS or Computer Science with coursework in anthropology, history or archaeology; OR Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, History, or allied discipline;
  • Educational and field experiences related to archaeology (e.g., mapping, data recording, site photography, routing access to survey sites, and drawing artifacts, structures, and sketch maps as needed); familiarity with historic and prehistoric Great Basin archaeology preferred;
  • Experience using ArcGIS 10.x and operating hand-held GPS units for navigation and electronic field data collection (previous experience operating Trimble units a plus); 
  • Exposure to reviewing and interpreting cultural resource data in reports, maps, photographs, etc.; 
  • Interest in strengthening current skills in developing, editing, organizing, and managing digital files using databases;
  • Written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to effectively communicate BLM land management (multiple-use) principles and cultural resource management concepts;
  • Experience conducting research and literature reviews, reviewing and drafting technical reports, and document editing; and
  • Experience working with the BLM and/or working in the Central Great Basin region desirable.

    Additional requirements:

  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting to accomplish project goals;
  • Possess strong organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines and produce professional deliverables including draft documents for team review;
  • Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans and schedules;
  • Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record with experience safely operating 4WD trucks on and off paved roads;
  • Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI and goals of BLM; and
Complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI). Applicants who already possess a fully adjudicated BI will be strongly considered
