Job Description:
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Forest Foundation and Tahoe National Forest, is recruiting four Forestry Technicians to perform stand surveys within the Truckee Ranger District. The goal of this work is to characterize composition and structure of targeted stands and to mark trees involved in prescribed treatment/management to reduce wildfire risk. These positions operate as a crew to apply silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides (paint) to designate harvest timber.  The marking crew applies instructions issued in the timber-cruise plan, taking and recording tree measurements, assessing quality, and determining defects.  Harvest unit boundaries are traversed to determine area. In addition, members of the marking crew observe and report areas of possible archaeological significance, and sightings of sensitive, threatened or endangered wildlife species.

The work will be physically demanding and will involve extensive hiking in steep terrain at high altitudes (6,000 to 9000 ft.) on a daily basis, possibly during extreme or inclement weather conditions such as snow or rain.  The position will require working in remote locations on National Forest land. Work schedules, generally four 10-hour days on and 3 days off each week, are subject to change depending on weather and project needs. This is principally a field-based position (80% of time).
 

Contract Timeline:
o Timeframe: 15 July – 25 October 2019
o Full time, 40 hours per week, possibly including some weekends, holidays.

Location:
The Tahoe National Forest is located in the north central Sierra Nevada Range between Lake Tahoe and the Sacramento Valley. The land rises from an elevation of 1,500 feet in the Sierra foothills on the west, to 9,400 feet along the rugged ridges of the Sierra Crest. Interstate 80 and Highway 49 crisscross the Forest and offer year-round access. The Truckee Ranger District is based in the historic town of Truckee, CA. Opportunities for recreation abound in this region.

Compensation and Benefits:
o $16.00/hour
o Limited Health, Dental and Vision Insurance will be completely paid for at no cost to you by the Great Basin Institute and available starting your first day of service.

Job Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Botany or other related natural science field, with coursework and experience that demonstrate understanding of the principles of forestry;, and 
One season of relevant experience in cruising and marking techniques;
Familiarity with Sierra Nevada forested habitat types, especially east slope, preferred;
Ability to understand, implement and adhere to established data collection, inventory, assessment, and monitoring protocols;
Capacity to collect and maintain field data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other resources staff;
Familiarity with and interest in resource management issues of western states and the ecology of the Sierra Nevada ecoregion;
Proficiency in navigating off trail using GPS and/or topographic map and compass;
Willingness and ability to work safely and productively in remote field settings under adverse conditions;
Strong organizational skills and ability to work cooperatively as well as independently;
Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
Willingness to work a variable schedule in response to project needs, possibly including some weekends, holidays;
Ability to work effectively in a team setting with USFS and GBI staff and field personnel; 
Driver’s license and clean driving record;
Experience in the safe operation of 4WD vehicles on unimproved roads; and
Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI and the goals of the USFS.
