Rangeland Ecology Technician

Job Description:
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management Nevada State Office, is recruiting a Rangeland Ecology Technician to monitor season of use utilization and to develop allometric growth curves for common northern Nevada rangeland plants. These curves will be used to inform annual production adjustment factors associated with the Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health (IIRH) and other monitoring protocols commonly employed for management of Nevada’s rangeland resources. 

The technician will oversee and work with a rangeland ecology lead to collect data to capture effects of grazing on landscape health and resiliency. The monitoring team will work closely with district natural resource specialists and BLM state office personnel to plan field data collection and to develop and implement an approach to creating growth curves for targeted species. The monitoring team will also assist BLM personnel with other related tasks as they arise. The monitoring team will be based at GBI’s Reno office. 
Responsibilities include:
Identifying common plant species of the Great Basin and Range
Collecting ecological data on Range ecosystems including: 
o Gathering utilization levels for diverse ecosystems:
? Characterize utilization, stubble height, woody browse and related indicators; 
o Collect annual production data using the double-sample and total harvest methods as appropriate; 
o Using basic rangeland and riparian monitoring techniques including but not limited to; line point intercept, basal gap, plant production, soil stability, bank stability; 
Maintaining and organizing accurate records of field monitoring activities; including study location and data obtained in the field;
Recording data electronically and on paper data forms, entering and editing data related to study site;
Reporting accomplishments and providing recommendations for monitoring strategies, priorities, and future sites; 
Conducting quality assurance/control of data collected, and ensuring established field collection and safety protocols are adhered to; 
Trainings in various rangeland monitoring techniques; and
Ensuring GBI and BLM equipment are maintained and treated properly.

Compensation and Benefits:
o Rate of Pay: $15.00/hour plus $300/month housing stipend
o Paid holidays and personal leave

Job Qualifications:
o Bachelor’s degree with coursework and field experience related to biology, botany, plant science, or related field;
o Experience identifying plants using taxonomic keys or familiarity with Great Basin Desert plants;
o Experience using hand-held GPS equipment for data collection and navigation;
o Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps and a compass;
o Understanding and/or experience using ArcView GIS software, helpful; 
o Willingness and ability to work in harsh, ever-changing desert conditions, including extreme temperatures, independently or as part of a team;
o Ability to bend and stoop for long periods of time while collecting seed;
o Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
o Willingness to camp in remote, undeveloped sites for multiple days; 
o Valid, state-issued driver’s license and familiarity driving 4WD vehicles on- and off-road; and
o Experience operating All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) on difficult terrain helpful.
