The Nevada Conservation Corps, a program within the Great Basin Institute, launched in 1999 with the goal of promoting ecological literacy through conservation service. With our AmeriCorps grant we have been able to provide that experience to thousands of members. Eighteen years later we are one of the largest and most successful conservation corps in the West. After completing a term of service with us, you will be joining the ranks of our alumni network that collectively have achieved so much for our public lands and our environment. Many have continued on to work for our federal agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, National Park System, among many other state, local, county and non-profit agencies. You will be asked to supervise up to nine AmeriCorps Volunteers while building trail, running chainsaws, or performing other restoration projects on public lands in some of Nevada’s most beautiful locales. You will coordinate with GBI staff, agency partners, and collaborate with peers to see that project goals are accomplished safely and efficiently. Based on your specific project you will be camped in the field with your crew on either 4-day or 8-day “tours” often in primitive and remote locations, and will be responsible for facilitating a healthy and cohesive community within your crew.
NCC projects vary from season to season, and crew to crew. Overall NCC crews have completed everything from invasive species removal, hazardous forest fuels reduction, trail construction, fencing, biological surveys, native species planting, riparian restoration, trash removal, illegal track decommissioning, nursery work, seeding, and herbicide application. These projects are accomplished through cooperative agreements with project partners at the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation among many other local, county, state, private, and nonprofit organizations.
